North Shore Golf Club – Orlando Florida

We were finally able to get out of the rainy northwest and head to the land of sun in Florida. On Monday 2/12 we had a tee time at the North Shore Golf Club, which is actually in Orlando Florida but not really where you might think. It is out near Lake Nona and is about a 30-minute drive from the Orlando Airport (MCO).  We had an early tee time, 6:50AM, and were joined by a single from South Carolina. The course was in fairly good shape, except the greens were really soft making it hard to judge the speed of your putts. Additionally, there were a few wet spots and as normal oak leaves were ever present.

Playing from the blue tees will help to make the course a little longer, but if you hit your driver over 250 yards you might want to play from the tips to ensure that you land in the wider parts of the fairways. The scorecard states the following yardage: Red – 4891, White – 5747, Blue – 6304, Black – 6814. I decided to play from the blue tees. It really did not feel like it was over 6000 yards, with the exception of hole 6 which was a 220-yard par 3 that made me use my driver (I think this is a first for me). There is ample water on the course so placing your tee shot in playable areas, i.e. the fairway, takes some planning.

Although we were off 2nd, we never saw the 2 older gentlemen playing in front of us after the 2nd hole. However, it seemed like we were constantly being pushed from the 3-some behind us even though we played the entire round in less than 3 and ½ hours. I don’t know about you, but I hate to feel pushed by those behind us as it messes up my thoughts and tempo quite a bit. I did not figure out why the 3-some were always on us until near the end of the round. It was because they were all playing from the forward tee boxes and hit driver/wedge on most every hole. So, although we played fast, you may feel like you need to speed up your routine to stay ahead of other players, which can make the round somewhat unenjoyable.

As stated, the course was in pretty good shape, with the exception of slow greens and somewhat hard sandboxes, and there seem to be personnel on the course making sure that it stayed in good shape. The amenities were really good in the clubhouse, offering a dining room/bar for after the round, along with shopping for equipment and apparel. The personnel staff in the clubhouse were very nice and friendly. The price we reasonable for this time of year in Florida, as you may have guested it, the prices go way up during the winter months due to the amount of play from those heading south for the sun.

Have fun out there and hit them straight!
